Micro needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a popular skin treatment that promotes the growth of healthier skin. The procedure can result in skin that is smoother, with less wrinkling and discolorations. Although it can be performed on nearly any part of the skin, it is most commonly recommended for the facial area.
As we age, our skin becomes more brittle, less supple and susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. Age spots and acne scars on the face also become more and more noticeable. Micro needling creates controlled micro-channels in the treatment area. As these channels heal, collagen production in the affected area increases, and the new skin growth is healthier and suppler.
How Micro Needling Works
The instrument used in micro needling looks like a writing pen. When the skin comes in contact with this pen-like instrument, micro-channels are formed in the treatment area. They aren’t very deep – usually only about two or three millimeters – but the body immediately responds by sending nutrients to the affected areas.
The new tissue growth that results is healthier than were the previous layers of skin. Furthermore, the tiny channels begin to induce the production of collagen, meaning that both the skin and the underlying support tissue is suppler.
Another benefit to this treatment is that it can be used with topical treatments to further rejuvenate the skin. For example, if an anti-aging serum is applied to the area directly after the treatment, it is more likely to penetrate deeper into the area, causing it to be more effective.
What Does It Treat?
Micro needling is used to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and other discolorations. Those who suffer from scarring due to old injuries or acne can also benefit from micro needling. The regrowth of skin and underlying support tissue means that damaged cells are discarded. Micro needling can also be used to treat large pores, stretch marks and even loose skin!
No special post-treatment care is needed. We usually schedule two or three treatment sessions, spaced out over a period of several months.
